    Hans Schabus (Watschig, Austria 1970)

Born in 1970, the artwork of Hans Schabus is concerned with spatial thinking, the experience and understanding of socio-political infrastructures and their impact on the lived environment. The artist is interested in the spaces we exist in and his work usually incorporates a journey or the exploration of a place. Each project starts with extensive research and the production of the work responds to the artist's physical and mental experience of the specific environment. The viewer is usually presented with sculpture, film, installations or an intervention which shares the artist's personal journey and the documentation or the story inspired by the place. Schabus selects different materials to connect different places and times.

He studied sculpture with Bruno Gironcoli at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna from 1991 to 1996. From 2012, he has been the Head of the Department of Sculpture and Space at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna. He has exhibited internationally, including at the Colombo Art Biennial in 2012, 6th Berlin Biennial in 2010, Biennial of Sydney in 2008 and Manifesta in Frankfurt am Main in 2002.
