Domenico Marchi also known as Tempesta (Florence, Italy 1652/55 – Florence, Italy 1737)

Domenico Marchi, also known as Tempesti / Tempesta / Tempestino, was the protégé of Cosimo III de Medici. With his support, he first studied with Volterrano and then, in Paris, with Nateuil in 1676.

During his studies, Domenico Marchi made several copies of portraits created by Nateuil for the French court. These copies were executed so skilfully that they have created much confusion and debate over their official attribution.

After his years in Paris, in 1689, Domenico Marchi moved to Rome to work with Carlo Maratti and travelled extensively between European courts and cities, especially in England, Ireland, Holland and Germany.

Returning to Florence in 1715, he was elected to the Academy and, a few years later, in 1719, he became consul.

He died in Florence in 1737.
