Hans Op de Beeck (Turnhout, Antwerp, Belgium, 1969)

Born in Turnhout in 1969, Hans Op de Beeck is the author of large installations, sculptures, films, drawings, paintings, photographs and texts. His work is a reflection on today’s society and existential questions, including death.

The artist considers the human being as an individual who plays out the surrounding world in a tragicomic way. Through his works, he seeks to create a form of visual fiction that offers viewers a moment of wonder and silence; he aims to stimulate the spectator’s senses and encourage them to truly experience the image.

Over the past two decades, Op de Beeck has created numerous monumental “sensory” installations that evoke what he describes as “visual fiction”. They are like an empty set: deserted tactile spaces, sculpted paradises for introspection, in which the viewer can walk or sit. In many of his films, however, in contrast to these depopulated spaces, the author emphasises anonymous characters.

He has exhibited his works in many solo and group shows all over the world.

He lives and works in Brussels, Belgium.
